      Implementing Good Storage Practices in Drug Import Warehouses in Syria: Case Study

      Good storage practices are part of the quality assurance process that ensures the quality of pharmaceuticals by monitoring activities related to storage operations. Maintaining a sufficient stock of essential drugs is necessary at the national level to ensure the quality of healthcare service delivery. A drug warehouse is more than a simple storage room in which sensitive products are kept in proper conditions as required by manufacturers or regulatory authorities. While pharmaceuticals are kept in the warehouse, proper control of various storage conditions is strongly required on a regular basis.

      The main objectives of our study are to: understand the term "Good Storage Practices" and its principles, assess and evaluate the compliance with good storage practices in drug import warehouses in Syria (in the public and private sectors), examine the difficulties and obstacles that "OHP" warehouse will face during GSP implementation, and determine the impact of applying GSP to it.

      To achieve this, the study was two-fold: a descriptive-analytical study, in which the reality of storing pharmaceutical products in drug import warehouses in Syria was evaluated to ensure that those warehouses comply with good storage practices, and to identify the most important benefits and obstacles that accompany the application process .

      The other part was executed as a case study; by implementing good storage practices in "OHP" warehouse. Assessing the current situation, conducting a gap analysis, and taking the necessary corrective and preventive actions. Twenty-three public and private warehouses participated out of the 26 warehouses that were the subject of our study (88%). A questionnaire (inspection checklist) was used as a data collection tool. Most of the respondents (>80%) had at least 6 years of working experience in the drug warehouse field.

      The study found that in Syria, a significant difference has been detected between existing requirements in drug import warehouses and the needed requirements for the successful implementation of GSP (P = 0.000). Among the main GSP implementation constraints are: a lack of adoption of quality culture by warehouse owners (100%), the inadequacy of necessary equipment (87%), and untrained staff (70%). And in regard to important benefits of GSP application: ensuring that the quality of sensitive products (to heat, humidity, and lighting) is maintained (100%), wastage and damage are reduced (96%), and credibility and trust with regulatory authorities is increased (96%). "OHP" warehouse was also awarded good storage practices certificate, which was renewed for an additional year.

      In conclusion, the reality of good storage practices in drug import warehouses was not satisfactory, and there was a dire need for warehouses to take corrective actions.

      It is recommended that warehouses pay attention to adopting good practices culture, labeling enhancement, continuous staff training, and completing what they lack in equipment, records, and documents necessary to implement GSP. Finally, good practices and ISO certifications are recommended.
