Topic outline

  • General description

The course elaborates in detailed manner the concepts of water, air, soil, coastal and marine pollution, classifying the types of pollutants, their sources and their fates in different compartments of the environment, discusses the effects and risks of pollution on the environmental, economic, social and health aspects, explains the strategic environmental impact assessment system for development projects. Moreover, the course will extensively provide mechanisms for controlling industrial pollution, and most importantly clean production based on life-cycle analysis of raw materials and reduction of pollution from its sources, and waste management. Finally, the course will deal briefly with different water treatment technologies compatible with arid and rural environment. The course contains four chapters: 1- Development of the Life-Cycle Analysis concept: This chapter contains Detailed description of the concept for materials and pollutants from different sources and its implementation phases supported by example and case studies. 2- Cleaner Production: Contains description of the cleaner production concept with a focus on Reduce Reuse Recycle (RRR) concept. 3- Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment: An explanation of the principles of strategic environmental impact assessment for developmental projects, its objectives, implementation stages and applications. 4- Management/Treatment of Pollution: Critical analysis of selected case studies based on course content.
